Mulberry Bags

Roger Saul is the man behind Mulberry bags, one of the biggest luxury handbag brands in the world.

In the early 70’s Saul and his mother started making leather goods in their garage. It’s hard to believe that the sleepy town of Chilcompton in the UK would be the birthplace of such a fashion giant but forty years after starting the business in their garage the Mulberry brand name is now associated not only with luxury handbags but also with high class fashion.

The company has diversified into not only bags but also scarves, belts, leather ware, jewellery etc although the company is most famous for their handbags.Their handbags are enormously popular not just in the U.K but all around the world due to the high levels of craftsmanship associated with a Mulberry product as well as only the best materials being used.

The company seems to have an almost uncanny knack of designing bags that women yearn to own and you can expect to see a Mulberry bag being carried by a celebrity or on your local high street.

Designing the next “It” bag is not easy as you have to produce a brand new design that your customers will instantly fall in love with and for a handbag’s sales to maintain longevity then the bag has to have a classic appeal about it.

You may well have heard of the “Mulberry Alexa” handbag which was released not too long ago. In a short space of time it’s popularity has gone stratospheric adorning the fashion pages of magazines around the world. The bag is so called as Mulberry’s creative director named it after a British TV presenter called Alexa Chung. Alexa’s individual style and elegance had already won praise from many pundits but Mulberry once spotted her carrying an classic Mulberry man’s briefcase and thought the look could be adapted for the modern market.

One of the predecessors to the Alexa was the Mulberry Bayswater bag which went on sale in 2003. This was probably the first time the company enjoyed the success of having creating a handbag that was simply more than just a handbag-it was practically a lifestyle aspiration !

As mentioned earlier, Mulberry handbags are favoured by many of the world’s top celebrities including (but not only), Kate Moss, Eva Longoria and Victoria Beckham. Even the future queen of England, Kate Middleton, was seen sporting a Mulberry bag on a recent state visit to Canada.

In this current age of austerity where severe government cuts are hitting the pockets of many people around the world it’s more than a little surprising that Mulberry have announced record profts. Considering that the company specialise in the luxury end of the market it really is quite remarkable and a testament to how well received it’s products are by consumers.

Unfortunately for Roger Saul he lost control of the company in a boardroom takeover and so he never really got to be at the helm of the company at it’s peak.

Today’s creative director at Mulberry is a lady by the name of Emma Hill and under her stewardship she has steered the company to record profits of £ 80 million !

Prior to Emma’s appointment the brand was in danger of stagnating and becoming a little too conservative in it’s appeal. By making use of the company’s English heritage and an eye for what women want today she has created a range of different styles that have secured the company’s worldwide reputation.
